Anthony Zacchara is a fictional character on the ABC soap opera, General Hospital. In the series, Zacchara is a well-known, maniacal mob boss from New York City. He was played by Bruce Weitz from 2007 to 2009.

Character's background[]

Introduction[]

Anthony Zacchara, a mob boss known for attacking rival's families, is first introduced as a client of corrupt lawyer Trevor Lansing. He becomes a suspect in the murder of nanny Leticia Juarez, who is employed by Sonny Corinthos and his ex-wife Carly. Anthony is also obsessed with his son Johnny, who arrives in town and forms a bond with Lulu Spencer. This leads to Anthony stalking Lulu, in addition to threatening Jason Morgan and Sonny's family. Sonny goes on to discover that Anthony is insane, and that Trevor has been running the mob organization for years, controlling Anthony's son Johnny.

The Black and White Ball[]

Anthony crashes a ball held by Nikolas Cassadine to celebrate his engagement to Emily Quartermaine. He stabs Trevor's son Ric Lansing, and he briefly abducts nurse Nadine Crowell, who is saved by her date Damian Spinelli. After causing Luke Spencer to have a heart attack, he finds nurse Leyla Mir, who looks exactly like his late wife Maria that he murdered in front of his son Johnny. He attempts to shoot Dr. Patrick Drake, but is thwarted by Leyla. He goes on to force Elizabeth Webber and Jason Morgan to choose which of the two would die by jumping off of a balcony, but they were able to gain an advantage and force him over the ledge. Anthony is left a quadriplegic and is confined to a mental institution.

Recovery[]

Anthony returns again, and to his chagrin, his daughter Claudia came to town and reunited with her half-brother Johnny. Anthony is able to recover movement above his waist, and because of his reaction to medication, Ric Lansing is able to have him released from the institution. Currently, Anthony is in a power struggle with Claudia and Trevor, and he is forcing Lulu Spencer to date his son Johnny, though the two are plotting his downfall. In September 2008, unbeknownst to anyone in Port Charles, Anthony regains the use of his legs and goes to the church where Sonny Corinthos and Kate Howard are getting married and shoots Kate in the chest using a rifle and bullet from Russia, to shift the blame onto Andrei Karpov. Ric catches Anthony out of his wheelchair, putting the rifle into its case. Anthony tells Ric that he shot Kate as part of a plot to eliminate the Corinthos organization by turning Sonny and Jason against each other, since Anthony knows Jason won't retaliate against Karpov like Sonny wants him to.

Johnny/The stroke[]

An actual moment is seen between Anthony and Johnny on October 6th, 2008, when Johnny is broken hearted over Lulu and believes it was all his fault Lulu went nuts. He says to Anthony that he will accept his fate and become a full fledged mobster. Johnny breaks down in tears in front of Anthony then. Anthony is actually moved by his son's tears and comforts him in his own way. On October 28, Anthony suffered an aneurysm while arguing with Claudia, who was going to let him lay there and die. Johnny busted in and rushed him to General Hospital where he offered Patrick extra money to save Anthony.

Anthony is responsible for the shooting of Kate Howard. He plans to silence his daughter after she learns it and plans to expose him for the shooting. Anthony knows that Claudia hired the gunman who shot Michael Corinthos.

Fall From Power/Prison[]

Anthony is among the group of benefactors at the Michael Corinthos III Pediatric Head Trauma Wing fundraiser party in the boardroom at General Hospital when an airborne bio-toxin was released into the air. After being evacuated, Jason tied Anthony to a hospital bed for his own protection. After a gas leak set the hospital on fire, the area around Anthony began to creep up with flames. When Jason came back for him awhile later, he was gone from his bed. Moments later, that floor exploded, leading everyone to assume that he was dead. But Jason, Sonny, Sam and Claudia knew better, and they managed to track Anthony to Miami, Florida. Upon learning that his accounts had been frozen, he returned to Port Charles, and held Claudia hostage in Kate's house, asking for $20 million for Claudia's life. When Sonny shows up to the warehouse, Anthony gives him an ultimatum: let Claudia die, and capture Anthony, or let Anthony escape, and save Claudia, who is trapped on a roof with a bomb tied to her. Sonny was able to accomplish both, with Jason's help, and Anthony was sent to federal prison. On July 10, 2009 Jason went to visit Anthony and at the end of the episode Anthony said that what he needs to say can save "your" life.
